“There is a total incompatibility between the joy of reading, a vagabond experience, and the experience of reading in order to answer questions, and explain what you understood.” – Rubem Alves, Brazilian educator.

What is most likely to influence your success at school or at a job? The ability to read well. And that goes for your kids too. The declining literacy of our society has been a major concern of educators for a while now, and yet things are not getting better. One reason might be a failure to recognize that reading and literacy are personal skills, best acquired when associated with pleasure.

Preschool lessons are so important. Math, reading and writing. It is up to us as parents to make sure our children get the best start they can. How can you help your child with these areas? Here are a few ideas.

Speaking and Listening

Encourage your child:

by showing them how to greet people,

to use a telephone,

to sing rhymes, songs and chants,

to practice following instructions,

by modeling how to be an active listener through nodding and making eye contact,

to play dress ups and role play characters from favorite stories,

by encouraging talk and description when using a range of toys and materials for play and craft .

Reading

Make a regular time for reading together.

Talk about books.

Give your child a range of books to read.

Join the local library.

Read old favorites again and again and soon your child will be reading them to you.

Writing

Provide a range of materials to encourage writing and drawing.

Write together.

Write signs and labels for things around the house with your child.

Math is so much more than just counting. Here are a few preschool ideas for math.

Search for number in your house, on a trip in the car, at the store.

Count objects whenever you can, socks in the washing basket, toy cars, dolls, biscuits.

Finding shapes.

Simple jigsaws.

Learning the time

Learning the language of position

f you teach your child these words, it will help them improve their reading.
Here are a few ideas of how to help your child learn these words:
Pick one word at a time and point it out to them when you read to them.
Get your child to find the word on a page.
Play a game for example, “How many time can you find ‘the’ in this book?
Play a game of bingo with the words.
